Why don't we have a classic car configurator?
It'd be awesome if I could go and configure a '59 impala, for example

because for the most part configurations are for configuring a spec on a car you would like to purchase. Nobody can purchase a new 59 impala, so nobody is going to spend time ensuring you can configure one.

Still it would be fun playing around with all the different color choices, body styles, engines etc..

If nothing else, I'd love to see the option lists for cars from the '50s through the '80s. It always amazed me what was optional back in the day, things we take for granted today (heater, power brakes, etc.)
I remember some books in the early '80s that we full of what appeared to be clippings and photocopies from sales brochures, complete with prices and option lists. This would be the perfect base for such a project.

That's not really true. Tons of people use the configurators, especially on luxury/high-end marque's websites just for fun. It's similar in theory to that European website that lets you modify cars. I think the OP's idea is awesome and something I'd definitely use.

That's a really good idea. I could mess around with a site like that for hours!

idea is awesome, but not profitable, so likelyhood of creation very low.

I think a site like that would get a decent amount of traffic.

I think you should do it. It sounds super easy, just choose a few to get started, sell ads for car care, auctions, save the configs and send to auctions or ebay and get commissions. It sounds like a swell idea, especially for currency exchange on options and increased value calculators based on auction history, e.g., the xyz engine was $55 dollar option in 1962 but now brings and extra 20,000 at auction... Mercedes and Porsche both maintain a helluva restoration vintage parts business amongst others.
